What is CityVerve?

Introducing Manchester’s smart city demonstrator

About The Programme

CityVerve brings together the brightest minds and pioneering uses of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to redefine ‘smart’ in the context of a living, working city.

It aims to build and deliver a smarter, more connected Manchester, creating a city that uses technology to meet the complex needs of its people.

Imagine a Manchester of endless possibilities: from new business and jobs to better healthcare and transport; safer streets; and more engaged and empowered citizens.

After all, a city is brought to life by the people that live, work and play at the heart of it. This project isn’t really about streets, buildings or buses. Nor is it just about giving cutting edge connectivity to sensors and devices. It isn’t about ‘things’ at all, it’s about people.

That’s why every aspect of CityVerve, from transport right through to healthcare, is being driven by our team of real world experts.

We’re teaming this incredible expertise with cutting edge technology, engineered and delivered by the greatest minds from across the globe.

And this isn’t just a reality for Manchester: CityVerve aims to create a blueprint for smart cities worldwide.

The CityVerve way

Learn more about our five steps to a smarter city.

Asset 1

A truly open platform

CityVerve’s ‘platform of platforms’ treats the city as a living breathing organism by giving it a technology layer that acts as a central nervous system; smartly supporting and connecting independent systems and applications.

Asset 2

Identifying the opportunities

Opportunities for projects will be identified to specifically meet the needs and challenges of Manchester’s citizens. CityVerve is needs driven and benefit led and will focus on four key areas: Health & Social Care, Energy & Environment, Travel & Transport, Culture & Public Realm.

Asset 3

Enabling real community

Using technology to enrich the local experience for residents, businesses and tourists – CityVerve can reignite the connections that turn a neighbourhood into a community.

Asset 4

Open innovation

Collaboration is essential for innovation, that’s why CityVerve has run open calls and events offering challenges, opportunities and APIs to developers and innovators from all walks of life.

Asset 5

Rigorous evaluation of projects to understand if the theory translates into the real-world, assessing if the desired result has been achieved and finally confirming whether it is commercially viable.

We believe true innovation comes from collaboration. That’s why CityVerve is being delivered by an exciting consortium of 21 organisations – including Manchester City Council, Manchester Science Partnerships, the University of Manchester, Cisco, BT and other tech players. The project is also backed by Government and Innovate UK.
